Genevieve is responsible for leading the foundation in its efforts to drive the creation and growth of national efforts to expand employment opportunities for people with criminal backgrounds by working directly with businesses to break down barriers to employment. She approaches this work with an emphasis on social innovation, collaboration and creative problem solving.

Vanessa Perkins
Freedom a la Cart
Vanessa grew up in a small Ohio town, considered by many as a safe place to raise kids. A dysfunctional family and sexual abuse, however, led Vanessa at an early age to escape through drugs and alcohol. Upon graduating from high school, her addiction led her to Columbus where escape in drugs was more readily available. It was here that she first crossed paths with a man she thought wanted to love and protect her. He had other plans in mind.

Like so many Ohio children with similar vulnerabilities, Vanessa soon found herself engaging in commercial sex acts as a trafficking victim – a nightmare that would last approximately 5 years. In 2009, Vanessa was re-arrested and enrolled in the CATCH program, a specialty docket of Franklin County’s Municipal Court. This innovative, voluntary two year program utilizes trauma informed support, encouragement and accountability to restore those whom the court would otherwise view as criminals.

In 2012, Vanessa graduated from the CATCH program and today is employed by the very court system that previously tried and convicted her. She serves on the board of Freedom Ala Cart, a local advocacy and mentoring organization for other CATCH participants, and continues to advocate for other victims of sex trafficking and domestic violence. Vanessa had the honor of speaking at the annual EVAWI conference in Orlando, Florida in April 2017. She also actively helps those with drug and alcohol addictions. Vanessa is raising an amazing little boy who is determined to end the selling and buying of humans as well.
